Grade 2 Orienteering Experience at Lycée Jules Verne (French International School)
The Grade 2 explorers of Lycée Jules Verne recently stepped into the exciting world of orienteering, and it was equal parts treasure hunt, brain workout, and outdoor adventure. With maps in hand and curiosity switched on, the learners discovered that finding your way isn’t just a skill… it’s a whole experience.
Step 1: Learning the Basics at School
Every great adventure starts with preparation, and this one began right on campus with a playful, interactive introduction to maps. The learners were guided through the basics: what a map is, how symbols work, how directions help you navigate, and why map-reading can feel like cracking a secret code.
To bring the lesson to life, 10 hidden “controls” were placed around the school grounds. Working in teams with their teachers, the children set off to find each one – learning as they moved, compared landmarks, and made decisions together. It wasn’t just about reaching the next point; it was about thinking, communicating, and building confidence with every successful find.
Jenny and Connor from the O-Ventures team added an extra layer of excitement by introducing a colourful cone grid. This turned navigation into a hands-on puzzle game, helping learners understand movement, spacing, and direction in a way that felt like play. The cone grid became a favourite fast – proof that sometimes the best learning happens when it looks like fun.
Step 2: Zoo Expedition at the Joburg Zoo
Once the basics were mastered, it was time for the main event: a field trip to the Johannesburg Zoo! The learners were divided into small groups, each guided by a teacher or parent volunteer, creating a safe and supportive environment for exploration.
With two hours on the clock, the mission was clear: find 20 controls scattered across the zoo. The excitement was instant – maps were unfolded, groups huddled to plan routes, and tiny feet got moving as the search began. Along the way, the learners were treated to the best kind of learning: real-world discovery. Lions, monkeys, and a host of other animals became part of the journey, turning a navigation challenge into an immersive educational outing.
What made the experience especially meaningful was how naturally it blended multiple learning areas into one adventure. Geography came alive through map-reading and navigation, Physical Education happened through walking (and running!) from point to point, and Zoology slipped in effortlessly as learners observed animals and connected their environment to what they were seeing.
The Grand Finale
After all the running, map-checking, teamwork, and animal spotting, the young adventurers gathered for a well-deserved lunch on the Tree of Light lawn. The energy was high, the smiles were big, and the stories were nonstop, each group eager to share where they went, what they found, and the moments that made them laugh.
In the end, this orienteering experience wasn’t just about finding controls. It was about building confidence, practicing problem-solving, strengthening teamwork, and discovering just how fun learning can be when it’s hands-on and outdoors.
And if the laughter at lunch was anything to go by, these Grade 2 explorers will be ready for their next adventure in no time.
